Description Debbie is a Master Beekeeper She has a degree in environmental Science from Stony Brook They discuss the importance of honey bees and her 5 year journey to becoming a Master Beekeeper She owns about 30 colonies and will increase them to about 80-100 colonies in the next year. She also cares for other people's colonies from East Hampton to Stony Brook They discuss the difference between bumblebees and honey bees They discuss the dynamics of the hive, that males only function in the hive to mate with the queen bee, then they die. The females drag the males out of the hive in the winter and leave them to die. Honey is the only food that never goes bad. They discuss what people can do to protect bees, such as plant flowers for them to collect nectar and pollen. They also talk about how the bee population is rapidly decreasing because of pesticides They address the issue of mites the bees can get and how they affect the bees and the colonies and the organic treatments Debbie uses to treat her bees to prevent them from getting mites.
